Tensions between Washington and Tehran have reached a critical point, with President Donald Trump warning the Iranian leadership on Wednesday that "time is running out" for their nuclear program.

This warning is not just rhetoric. It is accompanied by a massive movement of American troops and combat equipment towards the Persian Gulf, creating a strategic encirclement that analysts describe as the most severe in recent years.

Trump has described the naval force being deployed to the region as a “massive army,” led by the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln. According to intelligence and monitoring data from BBC Verify, the US presence has been strengthened with fighter jets in Jordan, defense systems in Qatar and warships in Bahrain.

The American president stressed that this force is ready to fulfill its mission with “speed and violence” if negotiations fail. But, on the other hand, Iran has responded with equally defiant language. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi declared that the Iranian army is “with its fingers on the trigger”, ready to defend the territory from any aggression.

Tehran continues to insist that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes, denying any intention to produce weapons of mass destruction. In addition to the military threat, Iran is facing a deep legitimacy crisis.

Protests sparked by the currency collapse have been suppressed with unprecedented violence. Reports from human rights organizations, such as HRANA and IHR, suggest alarming casualty figures, ranging from 6,300 to 25,000 dead.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that the regime is “weaker than ever” as there is no solution to the severe economic crisis. Although Trump has indicated that he prefers a new deal that would completely ban uranium enrichment, he has recalled last June’s attacks on the nuclear facilities at Fordow and Natanz as a warning of what could come.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Ghalibaf said Tehran is ready for “real” talks, but accused the US of trying to impose its will. With military assets increasing daily in the region, the window for diplomacy is rapidly closing, leaving the fate of the nuclear deal in the hands of future tactical moves on the Persian Gulf battlefield.
