China fired missiles into waters off Taiwan on the second day of military drills considered the most dangerous war games to date. As part of the drills simulating a blockade, China's Eastern Command conducted 10 hours of live-fire training, firing missiles into waters north and south of the democratically governed island.

Air force and navy units also simulated attacks on naval and air targets and conducted anti-submarine drills, while media in Beijing highlighted China's technological and military superiority and ability to take the island by force if necessary.

Dubbed "Mission Justice 2025," the exercises began 11 days after the US announced a record $11.1 billion arms package for Taiwan, prompting China's anger and warnings that the military would respond forcefully.

For the first time, the Chinese military said the drills were aimed at preventing outside interference. “Any external force that tries to interfere in the Taiwan issue or China’s internal affairs will surely hit its bloody head against the iron walls of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army,” China’s Taiwan Affairs Office warned.

Beijing has also stepped up rhetoric against Taiwan after Japan's prime minister suggested that a possible attack on the island would prompt a military response from Tokyo. Chinese President Xi Jinping promoted the commander of the Eastern Command, which also oversees operations near Taiwan, to full general, a move analysts say serves to show the military's combat readiness after a leadership purge.

President Trump downplayed the drills in a statement on Monday, emphasizing his relationship with Jinping and the fact that China has been undertaking such a practice for 20 years.
