A powerful winter storm swept across parts of the United States today, bringing snowfall and power outages to the Midwest, while other areas faced plummeting temperatures, strong winds and a combination of snow, ice and rain.

In the northern Plains and parts of the upper Midwest, including Iowa, North Dakota and Minnesota, the National Weather Service warned of blizzard conditions and "total whiteout," making traffic nearly impossible in some sections, the AP reports.

In Iowa, more than 200 miles of I-35 were closed, while dozens of accidents, including one fatality, were reported during the storm.

In parts of Minnesota and North Dakota, extremely strong winds were recorded, which further worsened the conditions, so that the temperature felt as low as minus 34 degrees Celsius.

In the Great Lakes region, the storm brought heavy snowfall.

Between 48 and 61 centimeters of snow fell in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, and meteorologists warned that more, but less, precipitation is expected in the coming days.

Strong winds and snow also hit parts of New York, Ohio and Michigan, with local winds of up to 120 kilometers per hour.

Meteorologists are also warning of new storms that could bring heavy rainfall later in the week, including on New Year's Day.

Across the country, more than 350,000 households were left without electricity, while air traffic experienced more than 3,500 delays and more than 600 canceled flights.

Meteorologists say the storm could intensify further as it moves eastward, due to the collision of cold air from the north and unusually warm air over the southern parts of the US.
