Today in the United States is Memorial Day, in which the country honors those who have given their lives in the service of the country.

President Joe Biden praised the sacrifice of generations of American troops who gave their lives fighting for their country as he marked Memorial Day at a wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery. "We must never forget the price paid to protect our democracy", said the president in a speech he gave on the occasion of this day.

President Biden is proud that his administration has had a time of relative peace for the US military after two decades of war in Afghanistan and Iraq. It's been nearly 21 months since the Democratic president ended the United States' longest war in Afghanistan. President Biden fulfilled a campaign promise to end a 20-year war that claimed the lives of 2,400 American service members.

President Joe Biden laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery, where nearly 400,000 veterans are buried.

Memorial Day was first marked with many activities in 1868, when the country was recovering from the American Civil War. It became a federal holiday more than a century later in 1971.

Valentine's Day is also a day of optimism, marking the beginning of the summer season in the United States.
