The wife of former South Korean president Kim Geon Hee has been sentenced to 20 months in prison for accepting bribes from the Unification Church.

The court acquitted her of charges of manipulating stock prices and receiving free political polls ahead of the 2022 presidential election, which her husband, Yoon Suk Yeol, won.

It is the first time in South Korean history that a pair of former presidents have been sentenced simultaneously. Judge Woo In-sung said Kim “abused her position for personal gain” and failed to refuse requests for expensive gifts, including a diamond pendant and several Chanel handbags.

Kim was ordered to return 12.85 million won and the court confiscated the pendant. She has denied all charges but admitted to receiving the gifts, which she later returned.

Meanwhile, her husband, Yoon, has already been sentenced to five years in prison for abuse of power and obstruction of justice. Investigations into the couple's ties to the Unification Church have also led to the arrest of the church's leader, Han Hak.

Kim has also been part of other scandals, including the cancellation of her degree in art education from Sookmyung University for plagiarism in her master's thesis.
