Doctor Dimitris Koukoulas reported that one of the injured told him that the van's steering wheel had locked during overtaking because the 'automatic lane assist system' had been activated.

A shocking testimony from a survivor about what happened in the fatal car accident that killed 7 PAOK fans was broadcast by Greek doctor Dimitris Koukoulas in Romania, who rushed to the hospital where the injured were taken.

" The steering wheel got stuck while overtaking due to the lane assist ," the injured man reportedly told the Greek doctor about the fatal car accident, as he revealed himself, speaking to ERT.

" I spoke to two of the three injured. The patient, who is better than everyone else, has several fractures in his lower limbs, told me that something happened with the lane assist system. There was an overtaking, the system opened the lane assist and blocked the steering wheel, he ran away, lost control of the car because something happened with the lane assist. The lane assist was activated and the driver could not restore the car's course ," he said.

However, it remains to be seen from the investigation whether this actually happened, as the lane assist system is automatically deactivated if the driver turns on the turn signal. In this case, it is clear from the video that the driver had turned on the turn signal, so if the lane assist was working normally, it would not have put the driver in the wrong lane.

What is lane assist?

Lane Keeping Assist is a driver assistance system that helps the car stay within its lane. The system monitors road markings via a camera and if it detects that the vehicle is drifting out of its lane, it actively intervenes on the steering wheel and returns it to the "correct" position.

The driver remains responsible for control, but the system helps significantly, especially over long distances or when fatigue sets in. This system varies from one vehicle to another, as there are times when it actively keeps the car in the center of the lane, making small, continuous corrections to the steering wheel.
