Political pressure is growing in the United States against Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem following the killing of Alex Pretti by federal agents in Minneapolis.

Democratic Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania has called for Noem's immediate dismissal, accusing her of "destroying the legacy of border security."

On the social network Bluesky, he declared that he was making a direct appeal for her removal from office, emphasizing that “Americans are dead.” He is referring here not only to the killing of Pretti, as he is the second American citizen killed by federal officers in Minneapolis this month, after Renee Nicole Good, 37.

As the BBC writes, Noem is expected to testify on March 3 before the Senate Judiciary Committee on the handling of the case, while her claims that Pretti was carrying a gun have been refuted by the video footage, where it is clearly seen that he was holding a phone.

However, immediately after the incident, Noem called the victim a "domestic terrorist" and defended the federal agents.

Trump comes out in support

President Donald Trump has said he has no intention of firing Noem, saying she has done a “very good job.” But Democrats in the House of Representatives are warning that if Trump does not act, they will launch impeachment proceedings, a political and legal process used in the United States to impeach and punish high-ranking government officials if they are accused of serious violations. At the end of the trial, it is decided whether the official should be convicted and removed from office.

"We can do this the easy way or the hard way," Democratic leaders said, although the chances of success are slim, as Republicans control the majority and the Senate lacks the votes needed to remove him.

Analysts see this as a political move by Democrats to increase public pressure and force Republicans to speak out in support of Noem, who is already under criticism for her tough immigration policies.
