NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte confirmed to MEPs that Europe is unable to defend itself without the support of the United States. The scenario of military independence would require unaffordable expenses.

“If anyone here still thinks that the European Union or Europe as a whole can defend itself without the US, let them keep dreaming. You can’t. We can’t. We need each other. And why do we need each other? I’m telling you. First of all, because the US needs NATO too.”

Speaking to the European Parliament's Foreign Policy Committee, he warned that if Europe were to target the crime of its own army to ensure protection, it would face high costs and investments in nuclear weapons.

"If Europe really wants to defend itself, and those of you plan to do so, forget that you can never do it with 5 percent of GDP, it will be 10 percent. You have to build your nuclear capability which costs billions and billions of euros. You will lose, you will lose the ultimate guarantor of our freedom, which is the US nuclear umbrella."

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has reminded Serbia that there has still been no accountability for the terrorist attack in Banjska, as well as for the attacks carried out on KFOR soldiers during the unrest in the spring of 2023.

"I have my own relationship with President Aleksandar Vučić. We have known each other for many years. But, of course, we expect him to account for what happened a few years ago, for two issues. And for both, he promised full accountability."

Before European lawmakers, Rutte presented two courses of action when it comes to the security of Greenland and the Arctic: collective NATO efforts to strengthen military and economic defense against Russian and Chinese influence in the Arctic as well as bilateral talks between Denmark, Greenland and the United States.
