The touching moment a young girl in Iran cuts her hair at the funeral of her sister, who was killed in a protest by the theocratic regime, has gone viral online and circulated on social media.

Melika Dastiab, a 21-year-old economics student, was shot dead by government forces in Kermanshah province. The young woman had participated in demonstrations, like thousands of her compatriots, against the regime, and paid for it with her life.

Her body was buried in her hometown, after a funeral attended by a large crowd, with the deceased's sister cutting her hair in protest.

A video originally posted on Telegram shows the size of the crowd that attended the young student's funeral.

According to the American human rights organization HRANA, at least 5,937 people have been killed in the protests that began on December 28 as a protest by merchants, but which quickly escalated into calls for regime change.

This is the bloodiest crackdown by Iranian authorities since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Cutting hair is an ancient Iranian tradition used by women as a symbol of mourning for the loss of their loved ones. This practice, known as “Gisumboran” in Iran (or “Chamar” among Kurdish communities), has resurfaced in recent years as an act of protest against the oppression of the Iranian regime.

In particular, after the massive protests of 2022 that followed the martyrdom of Mahsa Amini by the ETH Police, many women, not only from Iran but also from many countries around the world, cut their hair, expressing their support for the Iranian people's struggle for freedom and justice.
