A maritime incident is reported to have occurred today in the Gulf of Oman, where the Iranian authorities attempted to seize a Greek tanker.
The neighboring country's media reports that the Greek-owned ship carrying crude oil was traveling from the United Arab Emirates to Singapore when the captain noticed the suspicious movements of several Iranian vessels and immediately increased speed and changed course.
According to the spokesman of the American fifth fleet, Timothy Hawkins, an Iranian ship opened fire on the Greek tanker, during the second attempt to seize it.
Hawkins said the barrage of bullets from the Iranian ship caused no casualties and that the ship's crew was safe. He added that the two Iranian ships were withdrawn after the "response" of the American fleet.
Since 2019, maritime incidents in the waters of the Gulf have been frequent, as Iran has been accused of attacking or attempting to seize ships of international trade lines.
The Gulf of Oman is a strategic seaway point located between Iran and Oman, through which thousands of ships pass every day.
