Ukraine's military said on Tuesday it had destroyed nine helicopters while shelling airfields near the Russian-occupied cities of Luhansk and Berdiansk.

An anti-aircraft gun, special technology and an entire arsenal were also destroyed, according to the Ukrainian military.

As a result of the attacks, the runways of the airfields were also damaged. The Russian side has not commented on these attacks.

Explosions at ammunition depots continued for several hours, and dozens of Russian soldiers were reported killed and wounded, according to Ukrainian officials.

The airfields are located about 90 kilometers from the front line.

Russian military bloggers have described the attacks as the worst on Russian air bases since Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began nearly 20 months ago.

Earlier on Tuesday, local media in Berdiansk reported that air defenses had been used, but did not comment on possible damage or casualties.
