"Remove the sanctions, to allow the passage of grain", the US responds
Vladimir Putin

The United States has rejected a request by Russian President Vladimir Putin for the West to lift economic sanctions on Russia.

According to the Kremlin, Putin has told Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi that Russia will launch ships with food and fertilizer to ease the food crisis around the world, but only if "politically motivated measures implemented by the West end."

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said that grain exports from Ukraine could start if sanctions on Russia are lifted.

However, White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said there were no discussions about lifting the sanctions.

Russia must stop "immediately its war in Ukraine", which is affecting global food security, said Jean-Pierre.

Russia and Ukraine are important exporters of cereals, so they play an important role in the supply chain.

In recent weeks, the international community has called on Russia to facilitate the export of Ukrainian wheat.
