Lawyer Furtuna Sheremeti, part of Rexhep Selim's defense team , requested that her client be declared innocent on all counts of the indictment in the trial taking place at the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague.

Sheremet called the 45-year sentence requested by the Prosecution unprecedented.

“There is no evidence to support a conviction on any of the counts against Selimi. An acquittal must be declared and there can be no question of a sentence. However, if the trial panel reaches a sentence, the party will address the Prosecution’s unusual request. The Prosecution is seeking 45 years for each of the accused, based on Rule 163(4) and with a joint sentence, treating the alleged totality of the conduct as a justification…The Prosecution’s request is disproportionate and unprecedented in the circumstances of this unproven case. A 45-year sentence is practically a life sentence. This is not proportionate, it is a symbolic sentence appearing as a sentence,” she said.
