"I don't know what happened, I was convinced that I had left the girl in the nursery." This is what the father of the 14-month-old girl found dead inside his car said during the interrogation before the investigators. Italian media reports that the 45-year-old Italian carabinieri is under investigation for abandoning minors.

The 14-month-old girl was found dead yesterday in the back seat of a car in the Cecchignola area of Rome, forgotten by her father, who was supposed to take her to daycare.

According to the investigators, her father had forgotten to take her to the daycare center located a few tens of meters away from his office. The car has been impounded, while investigators will have to carry out a series of checks on the vehicle to clarify exactly what happened.

Yesterday morning, according to the first reconstructions of what happened, the baby's father, a carabinieri on duty at the General Staff of Defense, should have accompanied his daughter to the nursery, while the mother should have picked her up again in the afternoon. But upon the woman's arrival, the educators explained to her that her daughter had never come to school. When the woman saw her husband's car with the baby inside, she got scared and with the help of a passerby decided to break the window to try to get the baby out alive, but unfortunately it was in vain.

What happened in Rome is another tragedy of the so-called 'forgotten baby syndrome'. One of the latest cases in Italy dates back to 2019, when in Catania the father of a two-year-old boy left his son in the car for five hours in the sun. Again, the parent was taking the child to daycare. The father only remembered his young son left in the car when his wife called him after going to the nursery to pick up the baby. The man rushed to the parking lot, finding the little boy lifeless, immediately sent him to the Polyclinic's emergency room, but even then the doctors could not do anything to bring him back to life.

According to experts, the "Forgotten Child Syndrome" has caused the death of 11 children in Italy since 1998.

In 2019, the Assembly approved the decree on the obligation of anti-abandonment seats in the car, i.e. equipped with an acoustic alarm to remind the presence of the child in the car. A provision whose first signatory was Giorgia Meloni, which entered into force on November 7, 2019 and which provided for the obligation for children under the age of four. The devices, in addition to the visual and sound alarm, can also be connected to parents' smartphones through special applications.
