Erdogan phone call with Maduro: Peace in the Caribbean

At a time when relations between the United States and Venezuela are at their most critical point, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has held a telephone conversation with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, calling on the parties to keep communication channels open and work towards an immediate reduction in tensions.

During their conversation, Erdogan and Maduro discussed bilateral relations and regional developments. The Turkish president was quoted as saying that Turkey is following developments "closely" and believes that any problem can be solved through dialogue, something he emphasizes on every international platform.

According to the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry, Erdogan expressed “deep concern about the threats facing Venezuela, especially military deployments and actions aimed at undermining peace and security in the Caribbean.” The same sources said that Maduro explained to his Turkish counterpart the “illegal, excessive and unnecessary nature” of these threats.

Turkey and Venezuela maintain strong political and economic relations. Erdogan last visited Caracas in December 2018, where he openly offered support for Maduro's re-election, despite accusations of electoral fraud. International media have recently speculated that, due to the crisis with the US, Maduro could seek political asylum in Turkey.

The two leaders have been known for their close personal ties since 2016, when Erdogan publicly supported Maduro in another election. The Venezuelan president has visited Turkey frequently and attended Erdogan's third inauguration, whom he calls "brother." Meanwhile, Venezuelan citizens can travel to Turkey without a visa, reflecting the close diplomatic and economic ties between the two countries.
