Greece to ban social media for children under 15

Greece is also planning to ban the use of social networks by children and adolescents under the age of 15. The initiative joins several European countries that aim to protect children's health from the harm caused by social media.

After Spain, Greece is also preparing to ban access to social networks for children and adolescents under the age of 15. Greek media report that the Mitsotakis government has already created working groups and the initiative is expected to be announced very soon.

Athens aims to use existing digital applications, such as "Kids Wallet", to verify the age of users on platforms such as TikTok, Instagram and Facebook.

In Spain, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced on Tuesday that a bill to ban social media for under-16s will be put to a vote next week. Sanchez called the current digital space a “Wild West” full of addiction and pornography, stressing that child protection cannot wait any longer. Spain also plans to criminally punish the leaders of these platforms for manipulating algorithms. In a post on social media, Elon Musk called Sanchez’s decision “tyrannical.”

This wave of regulations is sweeping across the continent. The UK, Germany, Italy and Portugal are seriously considering similar restrictions, which in some cases could require parental consent up to the age of 16. France passed the same measure last month, which has not yet come into force. Countries such as Australia and Malaysia have already taken this step; in Australia alone, more than 4.7 million accounts belonging to minors have been closed since last December.
