Strong storms in Spain with heavy rain and flooding have cost the lives of dozens of people. The Prime Minister of the Eastern Autonomous Region of Valencia, Carlos Mazón, said that "we can confirm that they have been found dead". In the first balance of the civil defense, it is about 73 victims. Inland, in the town of Albacete in the Castilla-La Mancha region, dozens of people are considered missing.
On Wednesday after strong storms in many regions, the rescue forces are facing difficulties to enter the particularly affected areas, especially in Valencia. José Miguel Basset of the emergency forces in Valencia province said many areas could not be reached due to blocked or flooded roads. Rescuers are using helicopters.
In addition to the heavy rain, there were also hail and strong winds with speeds of up to 80 kilometers per hour, the meteorological service Aemet reported. Rivers burst their banks, roads, houses and fields were flooded in many places, cars and trees were uprooted by the bodies of water. As a result, the country's highways and roads had to be closed in the south and east of Spain. Air and rail traffic were also affected. Classes were canceled in many schools and universities. In the Andalucian coastal town of El Ejido, not far from Almeria, where the hail hit particularly hard on Tuesday evening, fields and hundreds of vehicles were badly damaged. "The hail was as big as golf balls," farmer Mercedes González told El Pais.
The Spanish government in Madrid has set up a crisis headquarters that met for the first time late Tuesday night to deal with the problems caused by the storm. Military units specialized in rescue operations were sent from Madrid to Valencia to support local services.
The Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, in a public address to the nation, said that dozens of villages and towns have been flooded, while many roads and bridges have been destroyed.
"On behalf of the government and the Spanish people, I convey our solidarity and condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in this tragedy. To all those who are looking for the missing, Spain cries with you, and it is our absolute priority to help you", said Prime Minister Sanchez.
Many more are missing and Spanish authorities suspect the death toll could rise.
"We are united and we will rebuild the roads", stressed the Prime Minister of Spain.
