The American ambassador to NATO, Julianne Smith, has called dangerous on Tuesday all the statements that encourage Russia to attack any allied country of the military alliance.
Former US President Donald Trump sparked a firestorm of criticism from the White House and senior Western officials when he said days ago that he would not defend NATO allies who fail to spend enough for defense and that it would encourage Russia to attack them.
Speaking about these statements on Tuesday on the eve of the meeting of defense ministers of NATO member countries, Smith said that the alliance is a pillar of security for all European allies, but also for the United States of America itself.
"The only way to continue is to maintain transatlantic unity. In July this year in Washington we will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of NATO. For more than seven decades, we have had Democratic and Republican American presidents who have maintained a clear belief that NATO is the bedrock of American and allied security, not a charity. Our security is also that of our allies," said Smith.
She has warned that at the meeting of the NATO Defense Ministers, which will take place on Thursday, February 15, there will be a discussion on the increase of the defense capacities of the alliance, and in this regard, the obligation of the member countries to achieve the goal of NATO for spending at least 2 percent of the gross domestic product for defense needs.
She has repeated that the USA is also happy with the increase in the defense capacities of the EU countries.
"We, both in NATO and individually as the USA, have strongly supported the increase of the EU's capacities in the field of defense and security. We are also encouraged by their assistance to our friends in Ukraine," said Smith.
Ukraine will be among the main topics of the meeting of ministers, while a meeting of the special group for support of Ukraine will be held, where, in addition to NATO member countries, other partner countries will also be present.
The American ambassador has called for continued support of Ukraine, saying that "if Russia succeeds in Ukraine, then the whole of Europe will be in danger".
She has also called on Hungary to ratify Sweden's membership in NATO as soon as possible. It is the only NATO country that has not yet done so.
"Sweden is a partner that is ready to become a member of the alliance. It continuously participates in alliance operations and brings real capabilities to the alliance. We want Sweden to enter as soon as possible. We were pleased with Turkey's decision to ratify Sweden's NATO membership and we encourage Hungary to do so as soon as possible,” said Ambassador Smith.
Sweden and Finland had applied for NATO membership together after Russia began its invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Finland joined NATO in April last year. /REL
