Mexican authorities have arrested Alfonso Fernández Magallón, known by the nickname "Poncho La Quiringua", one of the leaders of the "Los Reyes" cartel, for whom the United States had announced a reward of up to $5 million for information leading to his arrest.
According to authorities, the operation took place in the village of Imbaracuaro, in the municipality of Los Reyes de Salgado, in the state of Michoacán. Federal forces led by the Mexican army, supported by two armed helicopters, participated in the operation.
After his arrest, Magallón was transferred to the Attorney General's Office in Mexico City.
The Secretary for Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, stated that the arrested person is accused of illegal deprivation of liberty, organizing rebellion, vehicle theft, extortion and drug trafficking.
According to authorities, Magallón is considered a close associate of Juan José Farías, known as “El Abuelo,” leader of the Tepalcatepec cartel and founder of self-defense groups in Michoacán. For Farías, US authorities are offering a reward of 10 million dollars.
Investigators also link Magallón to drone attacks on military forces during 2025 in several areas of the state of Michoacán.
Following his arrest, members of the criminal organization burned vehicles in the municipalities of Los Reyes and Peribán and set up barricades on several roadways. Authorities reported that security forces quickly removed the blockades and restored traffic.
