Greece is in talks with Israel to purchase advanced missile systems that will be used to erect an air defense dome.

Reuters, citing two officials with knowledge of the plan, reports that the agreement, which is under negotiation, is part of a plan to modernize the Greek Armed Forces, focusing on the country's air defense.

Athens has announced it will spend around 28 billion euros by 2036 to improve its defense capabilities as it recovers from a 2009-2018 debt crisis and tries to compete with its historic Aegean rival, Turkey.

According to the agreement, about three billion euros will be directed to the creation of a multilayer anti-aircraft system, which will be called the "Achilles Shield" and will be able to withstand drone attacks.

At the same time, Athens plans to purchase new stealth fighter jets, frigates and submarines from the US and Europe.

Officials revealed that Greece intends to purchase 36 PULS artillery systems and anti-aircraft systems for the "Achilles".

Negotiations with Israel will intensify next month, one of the officials told Reuters, adding that Greek companies will undertake about 25% of the project.

The value of the 36 PULS artillery systems, manufactured by the Israeli company Elbit, is 650 million euros.

The systems will be used to protect Greece's eastern border with Turkey.

The second official confirmed to Reuters that negotiations to purchase artillery and anti-aircraft systems are underway. The Israeli Defense Ministry, however, did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Greece, which already uses US-made Patriot systems for air defense, wants to replace the aging Russian OSA, TOR-M1 and S-300 systems. In 2024, the country had expressed interest in purchasing modern anti-aircraft and artillery systems from Israel, but its military operations in Gaza postponed discussions.
