10 years since the biggest aviation mystery: Malaysia will not give up without finding MH370

Malaysia is committed to renewing the search for Malaysian Airlines flight MH370, Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Locke said, as the 10th anniversary of its disappearance approaches in one of the world's greatest aviation mysteries.

Locke said US seabed exploration firm Ocean Infinity had been invited to talks on the latest exploration proposal after two previous failed attempts, Reuters reported.

"The Malaysian government is committed to the search for (MH370) and must continue," Locke said at an event to commemorate the plane's disappearance.

Underwater exploration, $130.46 million

The Boeing 777 carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew members on flight MH370 disappeared en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8, 2014.

Malaysian investigators initially did not rule out the possibility that the plane had been deliberately diverted and debris, some confirmed and some believed to be from the plane, has turned up along the coast of Africa and on islands in the Indian Ocean.

Malaysia hired Ocean Infinity in 2018 to search the southern Indian Ocean, offering to pay up to $70 million if the plane was found. Malaysia, China and Australia previously completed the unsuccessful two-year underwater search costing $130.46 million in January 2017.

More than 150 Chinese passengers were on board and their families have sought compensation from Malaysian Airlines, Boeing, jet engine maker Rolls-Royce and insurance group Allianz, among others.

A court in Beijing began hearings on compensation in November last year.
