The shortage of doctors in Germany remains high. A solution could be doctors from abroad. Their number has already doubled compared to 2013, but doctors' representatives warn of problems.
The number of doctors without a German passport has reached an all-time high in Germany. At the end of last year there were 63,763 doctors, according to the newspaper Funke Mediengruppe, citing statistics from the German Medical Association.
According to statistics, the number has doubled compared to 2013, when it was around 30,000. In 1993, there were only about 10,000 foreign doctors in Germany.
Syria and Romania the most common countries of origin
According to the figures, the majority of doctors without a German passport come from EU countries or other European countries, as well as from the countries of the Middle East.
The most common countries of origin are Syria (6,120), Romania (4,668), Austria (2,993), Greece (2,943), Russia (2,941) and Turkey (2,628). The total number of doctors in Germany was 557,528 at the end of 2022.
The representative of doctors warns of language barriers
The president of the Rhineland-Palatinate Medical Association, Jürgen Hoffart, warned of the growing problems caused by the poor knowledge of German among foreign colleagues. From time to time, misunderstandings occur that endanger people's lives. For example, the terms "chest pain" and "abdominal pain" are confused, causing the physician to focus on the abdomen and overlook the infarction.
The problem could get even worse in the coming years, "because we will have more and more foreign doctors". One reason is the shortage of doctors, says Hoffart. German students will not be able to meet the demand for medical personnel in The future.Of the approximately 11,000 graduates every year in Germany, a significant part do not continue to practice this profession.
Equivalence of training of doctors outside the EU
According to the doctors' union Marburger Bund, the so-called Recognition Act of 2012 also offers doctors trained in a country outside the EU the possibility to determine the equivalence of their training (equivalence or conversion test). In cases where there is no equivalence, they are given the opportunity to take a language test and another knowledge test in Germany within two years. Only then can they apply for permission to practice. The test consists of an oral and practical exam, in which patients are visited. The test is focused on internal medicine and surgery. In addition, knowledge of other medical specialties is also checked.
However, the duration of recognition procedures should be significantly shortened. In addition, the offer of specialized language courses should be improved.
German doctors point out that almost all immigrant doctors come into contact with the German health system for the first time, through hospitals. Clinics must meet the necessary requirements for qualification and integration.
