The government in Haiti declared a state of emergency for 72 hours after armed gangs attacked at least two prisons in the country.

According to the BBC, at least 12 people have been killed and over 3,700 prisoners have escaped.

Armed gangs reportedly control 80 percent of the capital Port-au-Prince. The leaders of these gangs have demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry.

The leader of a group, known by the nickname 'Barbekjyja', spoke on behalf of the gangs. Jimmy Cherizier said all gangs are united.

"All of us, the armed groups in the provincial cities and the armed groups in the capital, are united," said the former police officer, who is believed to be behind several massacres in Port-au-Prince.

The violent unrest began on Thursday, when the prime minister traveled to Nairobi to discuss sending a Kenyan-led multinational security force to Haiti.

The perpetrators of the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moise in 2021 are believed to be among the people released from prison./ SkyNews
