Assassination attempt on former prime minister in the middle of wedding

Farooq Abdullah, former chief minister of the Indian region of Jammu and Kashmir (a region in the north of the Indian subcontinent, in the Himalayan region), miraculously escaped an assassination attempt during a wedding ceremony, after a person tried to shoot him from a very close distance.

The attack occurred in the presence of many guests, while the immediate intervention of security forces made it possible to neutralize the perpetrator and avoid a tragedy.

Showing no sign of remorse, the man who attempted to assassinate former Prime Minister Abdullah (who is also the president of the Jammu and Kashmir Party) told police on Wednesday that he had been waiting 20 years for this moment. He admitted that the attack was motivated by a “personal agenda.”

The incident took place during a wedding in Jammu, where footage showed the 63-year-old attacker, Kamal Singh Jamwal, approaching Abdullah (who was protected by bodyguards) before firing his licensed personal weapon. The bullet missed the target and Jamwal was immediately neutralized by National Security Guard (NSG) commandos, who miraculously saved the former prime minister's life.

When a police officer asked him why he wanted to kill Abdullah, the accused said: “Today I had the opportunity to kill him, but he was not killed, he survived.” When asked again about the motive, he replied: “I had my mission.”

Jamwal was beaten up by people present at the marriage ceremony and then arrested.

Rakesh Singh, an eyewitness, told PTI that Jamwal claimed to be the chairman of a previously unknown organisation called “Jagran Manch.” The accused said he lived off the rents of three shops he owned.

Meanwhile, the son of the target of the assassination, the current Prime Minister of the region Omar Abdullah, has also spoken about the incident, writing on X: "Allah is merciful. My father narrowly escaped. The details are still unclear, but it is known that a man with a loaded pistol managed to get very close and shoot."
