Two young men were arrested today by Tirana police after they attempted to take 100 thousand euros from Armand Duka , the head of the Albanian Football Association, by introducing themselves as Taulant Balla .
But this is not the first time young people have used this scheme to extort money from businessmen.
The fraud scheme allegedly linked to Florian Gjergji and a group operating with him has appeared in several other cases, with a repeated modus operandi: using the names of well-known characters to create credibility and then demanding large sums of money.
In the reported cases, the persons operating within the scheme were presented as high-ranking officials or public figures.
In one of the cases, the name of the mayor of Vlora was used, while in other cases well-known political names were used.
Contact was made through communication applications and victims were asked for sums of money, giving the impression that the request came directly from the person writing to them.
One of the most sensational cases was the use of Taulant Balla's name. A businessman was sent a message by a person claiming to be Balla and asking for 100 thousand euros, with the argument that the money would be received by someone he knew.
This scheme was suspected to be linked to Florian Gjergji.
In another episode, the group was suspected of attempting to extort 100,000 euros from a businessman, while in the 2023 case, it involved people posing as high-ranking officials and demanding money in their name.
The scheme appears again in the case made public today, where the target was the president of the Albanian Football Federation, Armand Duka.
Two young men allegedly contacted him through a fake profile, using the name of Taulant Balla, and asked for 100 thousand euros. Initially, the request was for payment in cryptocurrency.
The Duke suspected fraud and notified the Police.
The money was then handed over and an undercover agent introduced himself to the suspects as the son of the head of the Albanian Football Association. The two young men were arrested in flagrante delicto while the money was being handed over.
What stands out in the episodes reported over the years is the repeated use of the names of well-known characters as part of the scheme to gain the trust of the victims.
From a mayor to a minister and now in the case of Armand Duka, the name of a public figure is used as a starting point for communication and as a means to make the request for money more credible.
It is not known whether today's scheme is related to Florian Gjergji's group or not./ Tch
