May 1st, Workers' Day or International Workers' Day is a day commemorating the battle of employees among decades for more rights. The date is commemorated in more than 80 countries, where as a protest, where as a holiday.
In developed Western countries and with consolidated democracies, this date is marked as a date of protest, while in former communist countries as a holiday day.
The first commemorations took place on 1 May 1890 after the workers' day was declared by the first international congress of The Socialist Parties of Europe on 14 July 1889 in Paris, France.
The date was chosen due to events on the other side of the Atlantic. In 1884, the American Federation of Organized Trade and Labor Unions required an eight-hour working day to take effect since May 1, 1886. This resulted in a general strike and riots in Chicago of 1886, until their demand for 8 hours of work was met.
Five years later, president of the .B.A. Grover Cleveland, to break it from the socialist workers' day context, signed legislation to make Labor Day on the first Monday of September. Canada later followed suit.
In Europe 1 May, it was historically associated with rural pagan festivals, but the original meaning of the day was gradually replaced by the modern association with the labour movement.
In the communist bloc, leaders embraced the new holiday, believing it would encourage workers in Europe and the United States to unite against capitalism. The day became an important holiday in the Soviet Union and eastern bloc countries, with working-class parades in Red Square in Moscow.
In Germany Labour Day became an official holiday in 1933 after the Nazi Party came to power. Ironically, Germany abolished free trade unions a day after the holiday was established, virtually destroying workers' movements.
With the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the fall of communist governments in Eastern Europe in the late 20th century, large-scale Celebrations of 1 May lost importance. In dozens of countries around the world, however, May 1st has been known as a public holiday and it continues to be celebrated with picnics and parties, while serving as an occasion for demonstrations and rallies in support of workers.
