Albania needs 59 years to have 2.8 million inhabitants again. This is based on the progress of the natural addition of the population in the last 12 years, with the condition that no one leaves the country in the next 6 decades. In the span of 2012-2023, the natural addition to the population averaged 7,135 more births than deaths per year.
In order to have the missing 420,000 inhabitants from 2011, the country must wait for the year 2083. "What we see as alarming at the moment is this figure, which shows us that we must reflect on the way we are treating the citizens of this country. the country, for the way we offer them the opportunity to stay or leave the country", says Doralda Tanellari, researcher.
Even more time would be needed especially in Fier, a district which in the span of 12 years has lost almost 70 thousand inhabitants. Korça, Shkodra, Durrësi, Lezha and Dibra are the other counties that will need from 40 to 60 years to have the same number of inhabitants as in 2011.
"I think the key to change is supporting young people. Strong policies must be followed, the first of which is related to their good education, getting a profession that is related to the needs of the labor market and guaranteeing access to buy a house, etc., says the researcher.
In the third decade of transition 2011-2023, it was expected that the country would have passed the emergency after the communist regime and entered a phase of stable development, but the opposite has happened. At the end of last year it fell to the levels of the 70s, about five decades ago. But can those who have fled come back?
"This is difficult and almost impossible. This is because those who have fled are used to a different lifestyle and I do not believe that they will agree to return and find the same conditions from which they fled", said Tanellari.
According to the population and housing census, slightly more than 2.4 million citizens live in Albania. Compared to 2011, the population has decreased by almost 420 thousand or 14.9 percent./ A2
