Corruption won't let us grow

Corruption remains the main concern of female and male-led enterprises, according to a survey conducted by Monitor on its website through the ECR (Engaged Citizens Reporting) platform.

The survey was complemented by 503 pollsters, about 35% of whom were female.

80% of women surveyed said corruption is an obstacle to their investments. The same percentage is for the answers given by the entrepreneurs.

There is an unwritten rate in Albania, which if you don't pay, it doesn't end. The perception of women is that they are "corrupted" less and therefore reluctant to be asked for bribes.

54% of women said they had been asked to bribe once in the past 12 months, compared with 76% who responded in this way by men-led businesses.

52% of respondents who had asked for bribes said it ranged between 10-20% of the contract value.

"Corruption does not personally allow me to grow professionally, as the type of business I do is directly related to local government institutions and they give priority in time and quality only to their businesses or those chosen by them," says an entrepreneur in the service sector in Tirana.

"We fear for the future and for the growth of business," says a young entrepreneur who works in the "Accommodation and Food Service" sector, classified in enterprises with 10-49 employees.

The results of the Monitor survey with 503 respondents show that corruption is perceived as a very alarming issue and growing phenomenon in Albania.

More than 90% of respondents think corruption is a very alarming issue, while 77% of them estimate corruption has increased a lot in the last five years. 69% of respondents think the fight against corruption has shown no progress in recent years.

However, most of them think that the reform is beginning to work. The perception of citizens is that central governance constitutes the most corrupt segment. /Monitor
