Albanian consumers have less milk and country meat available in the market, which may push them towards buying imported products. Especially in the conditions of a tourist boom that the country is experiencing, this production seems not to be enough to cope with the increased demand.

Livestock statistics published by INSTAT for 2023 highlight a significant drop in milk production in Albania, which from 1 million tons in 2021, has dropped to 970 thousand tons in 2022 and then to 900 thousand tons in 2023.

The structure of milk production is: cow's milk 84.99%, goat's milk 7.85% and sheep's milk with 7.16%.

On the other hand, in parallel, there was a contraction of meat live weight, from 148 thousand tons in 2021, to 139 thousand tons in 2022 and to 135 thousand tons in 2023.

The most representative districts regarding cattle breeding for 2023 are Fieri and Korça. The greatest concentration of the number of wools and plants is in the district of Vlora and in the district of Gjirokastra.

The decline in milk and meat production has come about due to the reduction in the number of cattle from year to year, and this trend apparently has not been able to be stopped even by the support of livestock farmers through the National Scheme, which has been evaluated as the lowest in the region. Farmers receive 10,000 Lek per head for herds over 10 cows per farm and for small cattle, 1200 Lek per head for herds over 100 cows per farm.
