Albania has a series of mining areas rich in what are known as critical raw materials, which have been analyzed by the European Training Foundation, part of the European Union.

This publication, which measures the capacities of countries in terms of raw materials, underlines the importance of coordination between countries as a guarantee for Europe for important raw materials for industries. Specifically, Albania is cited for several types of important materials.

First, the study mentions cobalt, which is found in the mining areas of Pogradec in Albania. This material is of particular importance for lithium batteries, which are an important part of electric cars and smartphones.

Secondly, there is copper, with reserves in the Lezha and Kukës areas. Copper is of particular importance for a range of sectors from energy to construction.

The third is feldspar, which in Albania is found in the Shkodra area and is important for the ceramics, porcelain, and paint sectors.

Another material is nickel, which in Albania is found in Kukës, Devoll, Çervenakë, Përrenjas and Librazhd as class C deposits and a class B deposit in Devoll.

According to the EU Critical Raw Materials Act 2024, the overall demand for raw materials is expected to increase 6-fold by 2030 and 7-fold by 2050. For some materials, the projections are even higher, for example, the demand for lithium batteries in the EU is expected to increase 12-fold by 2030 and 21-fold by 2050.

Raw materials refer to unprocessed or minimally processed substances that are used not as individual elements, but as combinations processed into engineered materials or produced as co-products or by-products. They are at the beginning of all industrial value chains and are essential for the EU's competitiveness, productivity and growth.

They play an important role in the green and digital transitions, as well as in the EU's defense and aerospace sectors. / Taken from Monitor
