The buildings will undergo a new earthquake risk assessment, the 5-year process

After the earthquake of November 26, 2019, which had extraordinary consequences with loss of life and material damage, the reconstruction process received the main attention despite the criticisms that have followed on transparency and progress. In addition to the new constructions, an element of the reconstruction was also that of strengthening the buildings with lighter damages according to the classifications made.

The government admits in a document that the housing stock needs a new risk assessment in case of similar seismic events and highlights as problematic the informal constructions that were built without applying the necessary criteria. In the period 2023-2027, the document brings to attention that a project will be implemented that will precisely assess the risk for the housing stock at a cost of around 8 million euros.

Referring to the document, there are some priorities that the "Database of structural properties of buildings" project will have, where firstly the updating and correction of the database for the stock of informal buildings built without taking into account natural risks (earthquakes, landslides, flood) as well as other (non-residential) buildings assessed as at risk from earthquakes.

Secondly, there will be a periodic reassessment/assessment of the seismic safety of public facilities of strategic importance, such as dams, schools, dormitories, hospitals, objects of historical-cultural heritage, etc., so that the safety of these facilities is guaranteed for longer periods. long (in hundreds of years).

Thirdly, the reassessment of the safety of (large) dams over 20 years old, whose safety may have been compromised by the 2019 earthquake; this may also include a reassessment of the stock of abandoned and unrehabilitated mines vulnerable to seismic activity.

Fourth, updating seismic maps, approving maps of seismic zones, revising technical design codes in accordance with EU standards.

"The expected result of the project is the creation of a quality database that includes the attributes required for all activities, where it is essential that people with knowledge and experience in this field work on the basics (data correction is problematic). Also, the database should be related to the risks and other needs of different services at the local and state level. Database creation is a very broad activity that includes specific activities related to construction aspects, but also interfacing/harmonizing with other databases (eg cadastral data included in the Common System of Land Registration and Cadastre Information and various GIS bases,
