Referring to the results of the Census, from the population living in Albania, about 99.4% of them have Albanian citizenship, while the rest, i.e. about 0.6%, have foreign citizenship. In contrast to the population with Albanian citizenship, in the population with foreign citizenship and without citizenship, a higher percentage of men is observed at 54.5%, against 45.5%, with a gender ratio of 120, i.e. 120 men for 100 women with Albanian citizenship. foreign and stateless. This population is more concentrated in the young age group, namely 15-39 years and less in the population over 65 years and older.

"Scan Intel" has analyzed the characteristics of the foreign population to see how the numbers have changed, compared to the results of the 2011 Census. What is noticed from the data based on the results of the Census conducted in 2023, is the largest share of the resident population in Albania originating from Greece, Italy and Kosovo. More specifically, the figures refer to 3,076 citizens originating from Greece, 2,203 citizens originating from Italy and 1,094 citizens from Kosovo.

But how do these figures compare to previous data? Referring to the results of the Census in 2011, although with a higher weight in the total number of foreigners in the country, a decrease in the number of citizens residing in Albania originally from Greece is observed, by almost 27%. The resident population originating from the United States of America and those originating from North Macedonia also recorded a decline.

On the other hand, we have an increase of those originating from Italy, almost 112%, followed by citizens originating from France and Kosovo.

According to the 2023 Census, 98.3% of the population in Albania are local, and 1.7% are individuals born abroad. Among the population born abroad, approximately half of them, or 46.2%, were born in Greece, and 16.6% in Italy.
