Opening new businesses, Albanians remain in the status of self-employed

Despite the difficulties the economy is going through, it seems that Albanians are inclined to have their own private activity. The increased opportunity from tourism is being "exploited" as a step to have a business activity. This is evident from the data, where most of the businesses opened this year are occupied by "self-employment".

Official data from the National Business Center show that during the period January-August 2024, 12,240 businesses with distribution throughout the country were registered.

According to the Ministry of Finance, the number of new businesses has increased by about 4,700 more entities, making it clear that more businesses were closed.

How is their distribution based on counties?

At the top of the list is Tirana, since it is the capital of the country and has the highest number of population but also of demand for consumption, Tirana registers 422 new businesses, followed by Vlora, Durres, Shkodra, Fieri and Lezha.

While Kukësi with 22 newly registered businesses and Gjirokastra with 18 are listed at the end. The other category has a number of 10,889 subjects registered during this year in the KKB.

As for the registration by nationality, it turns out that 11,115 businesses are 100% Albanian owned, 961 of them are 100% foreign, 159 entities have joint Albanian and foreign ownership and 5 are of Albanian but state nationality.

In terms of their legal form, the largest weight is occupied by subjects registered as "natural person" or self-employed, with 9050 of them. A Natural Person is an individual who seeks to exercise an independent commercial activity and is self-employed, alone and/or with unpaid family members and other persons. The figure shows the tendency of citizens to work for themselves and it seems that even the decision of the Constitutional Court, which overturned the tax imposed on this category, has brought about a change in the situation.

Followed by limited liability companies where 3127 such companies have been opened, 22 entities are branches of foreign companies, 25 are in the legal form "simple company", 8 are joint stock companies and 4 are representative offices. There are also 3 agricultural cooperation companies and 1 JSC with public offer.
