2.7 million euros in one week, high temperatures lead KESH to import more energy

Almost 2.7 million euros in just one week. This is how much money the Albanian Electricity Corporation has spent in just one week to buy energy. At an average price of 106 euros, over 25,000 megawatts of energy were purchased.

In line with the high temperatures, electricity imports from abroad are also increasing. In order to guarantee the supply only for the first week of July, the Albanian Electric Power Corporation has purchased over 25 thousand megawatts of electricity. With an average price of 106 euros per megawatt/hour, almost 2.7 million euros were spent in total.

This is due to the lack of rainfall and forecasts for continued drought, which is expected to become even more severe in the next two months, combined with the increased need from tourism. The strong rays of the sun have reduced the water reserve in the Cascade of Drin to 1,272 cubic meters per second.

Compared to July of a year ago, the water reserve has shrunk by 10 percent, but still remains above multi-year averages.

Due to the high demand that many European countries are having, data from the Hungarian stock exchange HUPX show that, although fluctuating, the price of electricity is increasing. From less than 100 euros at the end of last month, on July 1 a megawatt of energy cost an average of 145 euros.

KESH's importation comes after many months of energy sales as a result of overproduction. Mainly in April and May, the Albanian Power Corporation had tried to manage the hydrological reserve by means of the optimization procedure. So KESH sold energy during the peak period and bought when energy was cheaper.
