The decision of the European Union's Home Affairs Council to accelerate the handling of asylum procedures for illegal immigrants seems to be changing the situation in the Gjadri camp as well.

The Italian daily "La Repubblica" writes that Giorgia Meloni's government has decided to make changes in order to put the open camp in Albania into operation in the spring.

According to a plan by the Italian Ministry of the Interior, migrants will not be brought to Gjadra immediately after being caught on the high seas, but will first undergo a quick check at the Italian centers set up for this issue.

After the approval of the list of safe countries, immigrants from Bangladesh and Egypt, which account for the majority of requests, can also be transferred to Albania.

The Italian government's plan is to process asylum applications within a month and, in case of rejection, repatriation will be immediate. Those who appeal the decision will also be deported, unlike currently when this process automatically suspends any further movement.

An immigrant who is denied a residence permit may appeal, but this will not prevent return, unless the court decides to suspend deportation.

The Italian government aims to approve the act immediately in parliament, before the entry into force of the new EU Pact on Asylum and Migration, scheduled for June next year.

The Gjadri center received the first immigrants in October 2024, but several Italian court decisions had prevented the government from putting them into full operation.
