The five are suspected of collaborating to execute the former crime officer.
The prosecution is expected to appeal the acquittal given to Donald Hoxha, who was accused of premeditated murder, committed in collaboration.
The murder of former police officer 'Doda' is one of the most sensational events that has marked a wave of murders in Elbasan over the last two decades.
How was Roland Rexhepi killed?
The execution of Roland Rexhepi took place on the morning of July 23, 2009. He was left dead on the spot after being shot with two automatic weapons, causing his instant death. The perpetrators were masked, but DNA evidence obtained from a motorcycle, cigarette butts, and a hood helped identify the perpetrators.
Although the two convicts never confessed to the crime, DNA comparison made it possible to identify them. In the case of Florind Shabani, DNA evidence was provided by German authorities, as he was convicted in Germany for narcotics. Albanian authorities compared his DNA with that of his father, Ismail Shabani.
After the incident, another assassination attempt occurred two years later, when businessman Ilir Rexhepi, the brother of the former officer, was killed in the center of Elbasan. He was executed on December 30, 2011, while security camera footage showed a person limping away after the businessman had returned fire, but lost his life moments later.
