Finiq, in southern Albania

A scandal of major proportions is taking place in the Finiq National Park, in southern Albania, where illegal miners have entered the protected area and are "tearing up" the ancient city, in search of gold and other valuables.

Foreign tourists arrived at the National Park yesterday afternoon to visit it and were shocked by what they saw.

Illegal treasure hunters have entered the protected area with shovels and are destroying it.

"Gold prospecting the Albanian way. You like to destroy 3,000 years of history in Finiq," write foreign tourists, who have also shared alarming images of what is happening there.

Even though tourists are filming them inside the National Park enclosure, the miners do not stop and continue their work. There, a relatively large area can also be seen that has been excavated with heavy equipment in search of gold.

The ancient city of Foinika received National Archaeological Park status in 2005.

Phoenicia has an ancient history, having been the capital of the Kaonians, while in the 3rd century it became the capital of the entire state of Epirus.

According to Polybius, it was the most fortified city of Epirus and stood on a hill in the shape of an overturned ship.

The Archaeological Park of Finiqi is located on a hill 283 meters above sea level, 9 km east of the city of Saranda, and the present-day village is located at the foot of this hill.
