How Albania, the "promised land" for Filipinos, is returning!

At a time when the number of foreign workers, mainly from the Philippines, is increasing in Albania, a suspicious case has shed light on the dangers of fraudulent international employment schemes.

Authorities at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport have detained five Filipino nationals, suspected victims of a trafficking scheme, who were intending to travel to Albania to work as cleaners.

According to the announcement made by the Commissioner of the Immigration Bureau, Joel Anthony Viado, the group consisted of four women and one man, aged from their late 30s to mid-40s. They were stopped on April 12 while trying to board a Cathay Pacific flight.

Initially, the passengers claimed to be private sector employees and were traveling to Thailand to attend the popular Songkran festival. However, the suspicions of immigration officers led to a more detailed check, during which they admitted their true destination, Albania.

Investigations revealed that each of them had paid around 90,000 Philippine pesos for the documents, while they were instructed by a recruiter to first pass through Thailand, where they would wait to be provided with visas and travel arrangements to our country.

Commissioner Viado condemned this scheme, warning of a return to trafficking attempts using Albania as a work destination.

"Amid growing economic hardship, Filipino citizens continue to fall prey to fraudulent offers of employment abroad," he said, adding that controls at border points will remain strict to prevent similar cases.

The five detained individuals have been escorted to the relevant anti-trafficking authorities for further investigation and to identify the network of recruiters behind this scheme./ Newsinfo
