"It's a successful failure", Rama: No lek for RTSH from Albanian taxes

Prime Minister Edi Rama said today that Albanian public television has failed. He said after a meeting of the Socialist Party parliamentary group that "the balance of public television is a successful failure."

"We have tried to create the conditions for public television to be reformed and we have failed with the most complete success. I don't know what the new director will do, but so far the balance of public television is a successful failure. Which means from debt to debt ," he said.

Rama stated that every option should be on the table, from final closure, privatization or some kind of partnership for RTSH.

"I think that every option should be on the table, both the final closure, and privatization, and partnership, and everything besides that. But I do not participate in this, just as I do not participate in any attempt to regulate the media. I made this "adventure", an "adventure" simply and only for a few things, and Albania was left with that paragraph, the draft law on the media. While today the EU discusses much more than that, I do not deal with public television, nor with online media. Those of you who suffer their slander, deal with it. I personally have taken into account that they have this job ," Rama said.

According to Rama, RTSH itself must reform. He warned that the government will not give the public television any money until it deserves it.

"They should reform. How is it possible that other televisions with much less budget are much more successful? Because their budget is not guaranteed. They must create it. Public television is guaranteed. They want the right of the Albanian Football Association to broadcast the national team, but they don't pay the money! Why? Because we are the public. You want our money, go to the government. We are not going to give public television a single lek of Albanian taxes until public television deserves the money of Albanians ," said Rama.
