TRAGIC figures on Women's Day, 12 women were killed in 2023!

12 women were killed during 2023, while from 2010 until now, 159 women have been victims. On International Women's Day, the numbers of murders and violence are sad.

Only for the year 2023, 12 women and girls were killed, 10 of them within family relationships and 2 by other people, while 5 cases remained pending.

"Unfortunately, the killing of women and girls is the most extreme form of violence. The change will basically come when we educate boys and girls", said in a press statement the Ombudsman, Erinda Ballanca.

While the Minister of the Interior Taulant Balla said that in Albania we have a disturbing phenomenon of femicide, where the problem is also the cases that are not reported, mainly due to stigma.

"The figures we are giving today are only the tip of the iceberg, considering the cases that are not reported," said Balla.

In 2024, in just two months (January-February) there are 629 girls and women who reported violence in a total of 890 reports.

A tragic panorama is also in the requests for protection order.

Of the 465 victims who have received a protection order, 350 are girls and women.

Another element is sexual crimes, of which we have 125 complaints and of these, 103 are women and girls.

Minister Balla declared that the confiscated crime apartment will be made available to abused women and girls. Balla said that he is cooperating with non-governmental organizations for women, but also with donors to collect funds to implement such a project.

On March 1, 2023, one of the worst massacres in the country took place. Mevlute Hysa, Hasime Dafku and Etleva Kurti were killed during the day by Dan Hutra. He also stabbed Marjana Gurakuqi, Elena Hysa along with her mother.

On April 8, 2023 , Roland Sinani was the person who took the life of his sister-in-law, 37-year-old Migena Sinani , who was sleeping with her 2-year-old daughter.

In September 2023 , a fight between two sisters in Tirana escalated to murder. 37-year-old Amanda Pushani was killed by her 40-year-old sister, a teacher of the Albanian language.

Meanwhile, Merushe Gjuzi committed the fatal act of suicide due to constant conflicts with her husband. The 55-year-old woman jumped from the van on the Peqin-Elbasan road and did not manage to survive her injuries.

The last two cases were those of Bedrie Loka and Sibela Abedini.

Bedrie Loka , mother of 4 children, ended her life in her apartment, poisoning herself due to bullying on social networks, while the publication of an intimate photo became the reason for the suicide of 27-year-old Sibela Abedini in Tirana.

The latter jumped from the terrace of the building where she lived in Kamez.
