"These men have committed murders for the Prime Minister on his orders and also the Interior Minister's. I have proof."
This statement given by 36-year-old Irfan Azizi in a London courtroom, reported by the Daily Mail, has made the rounds of Albanian media.
Westminster Magistrates' Court heard yesterday that Irfan Azizi is wanted in Albania to serve a one-year prison sentence, after being convicted in absentia for possession of a mobile phone while in custody for other criminal offences.
Also known as "Fania of Berat", the 36-year-old from the village of Poshnje is trying to convince authorities in Great Britain not to allow his extradition to Albania, under allegations that Talo Çela's group seeks to eliminate him.
He has been living in England for 6 years with his wife and four children, and in 2025 he was sentenced to six months in prison along with another person for possession of forged German patents.
Criminal past in Albania
Irfan Azizi has been registered by the Albanian Police and law enforcement authorities as a person involved in illegal activities in the field of theft, mainly of vehicles. In 2018, Ermir Azizi and his brother Fania were detained by the Fier Police for stealing a Mercedes.
During a search conducted at the vehicle cemetery called "Azizi" in the village of Poshnje, Berat, owned by citizens Irfan and Ermir Azizi, the Mercedes stolen by the two brothers in Lushnje, which they had dismantled with the intention of selling for spare parts, was found and seized.
At the time, Irfan was 28 years old and had previously been convicted of theft and had been prosecuted for gambling, while his brother Ermir was 26 years old and had been convicted of illegal possession of weapons.
Westminster Magistrates' Court heard how Fania had evaded justice by claiming he had paid money to a judge. The Albanian, who faces deportation from England, claimed that before he was assassinated and fled to the island, he was a "wealthy businessman" in Albania, with three petrol stations, as well as car washes and a coffee bar.
The assassination attempt on him took place on November 29, 2020, when a person armed with a Kalashnikov got out of a vehicle that stopped outside a gas station and began firing in bursts. Irfan Azizi was wounded in the hand and five weeks later, he left Albania.
The mastermind of the assassination has been widely reported in Albanian media as Talo Çela, a former close friend of Aziz, who is currently one of the most wanted criminals in Albania.
Why Talo Çela wanted him dead
Irfan Aziz has been reported for petty crimes. Previous reports, dating back to August 2018 and September 2021, describe him as a person who mainly engaged in car thefts.
Among his regular clients in the sale and purchase of stolen vehicles was Talo Çela, a hired killer who, according to Sky Ecc wiretaps, was used by the Çopja brothers, based in Dubai, to eliminate opponents in the drug trade.
But in November 2020, Irfan Azizi miraculously escapes an assassination attempt. He is hit by a bullet in the hand after the perpetrators' weapons jam. SKY ECCC intercepts show that the perpetrator was precisely Talo Çela.
Hitman Talo Çela suspected that Azizi had sold rival gangs a car that was used to eliminate his brother Bujar Çela.
Sky ECC intercepts reveal that for two weeks in a row, Talo Çela had been going to Berat almost every day to observe Irfan Haziz's movements and organize the November 2020 assassination, when he was shot in Berat from a moving vehicle.
From the leaked conversations of the SKY ECC application, Talo Çela appears as the main coordinator of the assassination, giving instructions for the elimination of Irfan Aziz. In one of the communications, he writes to his colleagues: "I definitely have to find him, he's not going anywhere," insisting on finding Aziz. In another message, he insists: "Don't let him get away from us again, finish the job."
It must be said that Irfan Azizi and Talo Çela had been friends. They had even participated in the robbery. It was just that their paths had parted and Azizi saw himself as a target of the criminal group.
