A story of fraud has been brought to the spotlight again, this time with a more sophisticated method where messages were not enough.

It was about 60 thousand euros, an amount that the fraudsters intended to profit from through pressure and manipulation, from a director of a large state-owned enterprise.

The figure was requested by father and son, Kledis and Kujtim Muzhaqi , who were removed as Prime Minister Edi Rama .

It all started with an unusual message that arrived on the encrypted SIGNAL application, on the phone of a director of a large state-owned enterprise.

"How are we doing with the objectives?" read the message coming from an unknown number.

The director opened the message, and just a few moments later he received a VIDEO CALL. When he answered, Prime Minister Edi Rama appeared on the screen, wearing the characteristic red glasses that he often wears in public. After hanging up the call, another message arrived:

"I'm Rama, send me 60 thousand euros to Elbasan. Communicate with this number."

The director notified the state police, where the Economic Crimes Unit of the Tirana Police immediately organized a full-scale operation, staging a meeting in Elbasan as if the money was going to be handed over. It was during this operation that Kledis and Kujtim Muzhaqi were arrested.

Police suspect that Edi Rama's image in the video call was created with Artificial Intelligence, a new method being used by criminal groups to manipulate and extort officials or businessmen.

20-year-old  Kledis Muzhaqi  was placed under "house arrest", while his father, Kujtim Muzhaqi, was placed under "prison arrest". Sources close to the investigation told Infonews that investigators are convinced that father and son did not act alone.

It is suspected that behind this fraud scheme are also names known for fraud episodes in Albania.

The case has raised the alarm about the use of AI technology in increasingly sophisticated scams, where a few seconds of video call can be used to convince victims that they are communicating with well-known state figures. The case where official names are used to extort sums of money is known from Florian Gjergji's group. 

Since the beginning of 2023, Florian Gjergji has been one of the most wanted persons in terms of fraud schemes. The police have on several occasions uncovered evidence of how he imposed fines on businessmen by presenting himself sometimes as the mayor of Vlora and sometimes as Erion Veliaj of Tirana.

Gjergji uses the applications "Telegram" and "Signal", where he introduces himself to businessmen, mainly in the construction field, such as mayors, ministers, or even heads of state institutions.
