Vatican Radio: Pope Francis and Albanians, a special bond

Pope Francis' first  European  trip was to small Albania, where the martyrdom of the Catholic Church and the entire people was still felt, but where the strength of interfaith coexistence was demonstrated. Holy Father Bergoglio showed with facts that he truly loved the Albanians, from whose bosom came Mother Teresa, often mentioned in his homilies and speeches.

Pope Francis had a special connection with Albania and the Albanians, whom he wanted to visit first in Europe. He often mentioned the Albanian saint of charity, Mother Teresa, a point of reference for how a Church always on the move should exist in the world, conceived by the Holy Father as a field hospital, that is, as a place to heal wounds and comfort humanity, always on the move, never stopping, with deep roots in tradition.

Visit to Tirana

Even for Pope Francis' first visit to Europe, the date was the 21st, like today's, when the whole world mourns the loss of the Successor of Saint Peter, but the month was different. It was September 21, 2014 - just a few months after Bergoglio's election and the beginning of his papacy - when the Pope went on a one-day visit to Tirana, with two goals: to pay homage to the Albanian martyrs of communism, who were persecuted for not denying Christ, "to the point of sacrifice", as the Holy Father himself said in the capital of Albania; and, secondly, to highlight the model of peaceful coexistence between religions in the homeland of the Albanians, which is "fraternity" - he always underlined in Tirana - and not simply "tolerance".

Even the motto with which the bishops, clergy and Catholic believers welcomed him has something to do with this year's Jubilee dedicated to hope, also proclaimed by Pope Francis. It was: "Together with God, towards the hope that does not disappoint". The Holy Father, after being received at the Presidential Palace (then president, Bujar Nishani), celebrated mass in Tirana's Mother Teresa Square, where he also said the Angelus. Then, at the Catholic University of Our Lady of Good Counsel, he met with the leaders of various Christian denominations and those of the Muslim community, the Sunnis and Bektashis. In the afternoon, at the Cathedral of St. Paul in Tirana, he spoke to the bishops, priests, nuns, religious and Catholic seminarians, with his unforgettable embrace and tears as he met the survivors of communism, Sister Maria Kaleta and Don Ernest Simon, now a cardinal. Finally, greeting the children of the Betania Center, near Tirana, as well as a representation of assistants from charitable centers of the Catholic Church throughout Albania, accompanied by volunteers.

Në 550-vjetorin e vdekjes së Gjergj Kastriotit

Katër vite më vonë, më 19 nëntor 2018, Ati i Shenjtë pret në Vatikan një përfaqësi shqiptarësh nga të gjitha trevat e banuara prej tyre në Shqipëri, Kosovë, Mal të Zi e gjetiu, me rastin e 550-vjetorit të vdekjes së Gjergj Kastriotit – Skënderbeut, “Athleta Christi”. Ngjarja u organizua nga ambasada e Shqipërisë në Selinë e Shenjtë, me kujdesin e veçantë të së ngarkuarës së atëhershme me punë, aktualisht ambasadores Majlinda Frangaj. Edhe atëherë, duke vënë në dukje bëmat e Kastriotit, Papa nuk mungoi ta ngrejë lart popullin shqiptar. “Pak herë në histori – pati thënë ai – një individ i veçantë ka mishëruar në mënyrë kaq të qartë e në masë kaq të madhe virtytet e një populli, deri në atë pikë saqë është e vështirë t’i kuptohet shpirti pa u ndalur e pa marrë parasysh parimet dhe vlerat, që e frymëzuan atë personazh”. Papa nuk pati harruar të përmendë Vitin kushtuar Skënderbeut e, edhe arbëreshët e Italisë, duke vënë në dukje lidhjen e tyre me tokën e origjinës. Duke e dhënë bekimin e tij për të pranishmit e për popullin shqiptar, me kujtimin e martirëve e të Nënë Terezës, Papa, edhe atëherë, la këtë mesazh:

“Uroj sinqerisht që ky përvjetor (550-vjetori i vdekjes së Skënderbeut) të mos kufizohet vetëm në kremtimin e lavdisë së bëmave të kaluara, por të jetë edhe për Shqipërinë një rast i volitshëm për një angazhim të ripërtërirë nga të gjithë, institucione dhe qytetarë, në favor të një zhvillimi të vërtetë e të ekuilibruar, në mënyrë që brezat e rinj të mos detyrohen të zgjedhin emigracionin, duke dobësuar vendin nga forcat dhe aftësitë e domosdoshme për zhvillimin e tij njerëzor e civil”.

Tërmeti i vitit 2019

Një vit më vonë, vit tejet i vështirë për Shqipërinë, për shkak të tërmetit të fuqishëm, që shkatërroi sidomos qytetin e Durrësit dhe fshatin e Kodër-Thumanës, mendimi i Papës jo më larg se të nesërmen, gjatë audiencës së përgjithshme të 27 nëntorit, shkoi drejt “popullit të dashur” të Shqipërisë.

“Dua t’i dërgoj përshëndetjen dhe afërsinë time popullit të dashur shqiptar, i cili ka vuajtur kaq shumë këto ditë. Shqipëria ishte vendi i parë në Evropë që desha të vizitoj. Jam pranë viktimave, lutem për të vdekurit, për të lënduarit, për familjet. Zoti e bekoftë këtë popull, që e dua shumë”.

Emërimet e ipeshkvijve

Pope Francis has continued to follow the Catholic Church and the people in Albanian territories with great attention, firstly, through the “ad Limina” visits of the bishops to the Vatican, during which the Holy Father has been periodically informed about the situation of the faithful and the people in general. Then, through the appointments of new bishops, such as Bishop Gjergj Meta in Rrëshen (currently, president of the Episcopal Conference of Albania), Bishop Arjan Dodaj as metropolitan archbishop of Tirana-Durrës, Bishop Giovanni Peragine as coadjutor in the metropolitan archbishopric of Shkodër-Pulti.

Prayer for Mother Teresa

And then, other meetings with believers in the Vatican, with representatives of various religious communities and with heads of state and government from Albania, Kosovo, Montenegro, Macedonia... It was precisely in the latter, during the visit to the Memorial of Mother Teresa, on May 7, 2019, that Pope Francis blessed the first stone for the sanctuary of the Albanian saint, and, praying, he repeated what was his papacy's program:

"We pray: intercede with Christ, that we too may obtain the grace to be vigilant and attentive to the cry of the poor, of those deprived of their rights, of the sick, the marginalized, the last. May the Lord grant us the grace to see in the eyes of the one who sees us, the cry for help! May he give us a heart that knows how to love the God present in every man and woman; a heart that knows how to see in the hearts of those who suffer injustice. May he grant us the grace to be a sign of love and hope in our time, which has so many needy, abandoned, oppressed and migrants. May our love not be just words, but be fruitful and true, so that we may faithfully bear witness to the Church, which has the duty of preaching the Gospel to the poor, liberation to the captives, joy to the afflicted, the grace of salvation to all."/ Vatican Radio
