PROTEST in Greece/ Farmers attempt to overturn police van, violent clashes with
 Greece

In  Greece,  farmers have been blocking national roads since yesterday in protest over delays in the granting of EU subsidies following a corruption scandal.

In the Thessaly region, clashes erupted when farmers blocked an Athens-Thessaloniki highway, demanding compensation for delayed EU subsidies and denouncing corruption.

Police used tear gas to disperse the crowd, while some protesters tried to cross the lane and overturn the police van.

The payment delays come amid investigations into a scandal in which several farmers are suspected of falsifying ownership of land and livestock to receive EU agricultural subsidies.

Greek authorities have launched separate investigations and parliament is investigating the government agency OPEKEPE, which distributes around 2.5 billion euros in EU aid each year to hundreds of thousands of farmers.

The government, which has promised transparency, has admitted that the first tranche of EU subsidies is lower than last year and that over 40,000 farmer applications are under inspection.

As a result of this situation, we remind you that today the Kakavija-Ioannina road axis is completely blocked from 11:00 to 17:00 (Albanian time), interrupting the circulation of all vehicles, except in cases of health emergencies.
