120,000 cameras hacked for sexual material, four arrested in South Korea

Four people have been arrested in South Korea for hacking 120,000 cameras in homes and businesses, the footage of which was used to produce sexual material for a website.

On Sunday, police announced the arrests and said the defendants exploited weak points in the cameras' IPs, such as simple passwords.

IP cameras are cheaper than CCTV and are known as home cameras. They connect to the home internet line and are often installed for security or to monitor the safety of children or pets.

The locations where the hacked cameras were located included private homes, karaoke rooms, a pilates studio and a gynecological clinic.

The statement from the National Police Agency states that the four arrested individuals acted independently of each other and were not exposed together.

One of them is accused of hacking 63,000 cameras and producing 545 pieces of sexual material that he sold for 35 million won ($12,235) worth of virtual assets.

Another had hacked 70,000 cameras and sold 648 videos for 18 million won in virtual assets.

The two suspects are responsible for almost 62% of the videos posted last year on a website that illegally distributed hacked camera footage.

Police are now attempting to block and shut down the website, working with foreign agencies to investigate the operator. Three people suspected of purchasing and consuming material through the site have also been arrested.

Authorities have gone to the points or notified victims of 58 different locations, informing them of the incident and instructing them to change their passwords.

They are also helping victims delete and block content, as well as identifying others who may have been affected.
