Fatos Nano

Former Prime Minister of Albania, Fatos Nano , passed away this Friday, October 31 .

The former leader of the Socialist Party, 73 years old, had been in intensive care for almost a month in a hospital in the capital.

Nano retired from politics in 2005 and served as prime minister from 1991, 1997-1998, and 2002-2005. He was the founder of the Socialist Party and its first leader.

Who was Fatos Nano, the "architect" of the Socialist Party:

Fatos Nano was Prime Minister of Albania three times. For 13 years, he was the leader of the Socialist Party.

Nano held the office of Prime Minister from September 29, 2002 to September 1, 2005, July 25, 1997 to September 27, 1998, February 22, 1991 to June 4, 1991. As chairman of the Socialist Party, he held this office from June 12, 1991 to July 3, 2005.

Fatos Nano began his political career in 1991, after being elected Prime Minister of the Transitional Government, with the aim of organizing the first democratic elections in Albania that same year and preparing the country for the transition to a market economy and a democratic system. The elections of 31 March 1991 were won by the Socialist Party of Albania and he was again appointed Prime Minister. After two months, he was forced to resign. That year, he was elected chairman of the Socialist Party, which was the successor to the Party of Labour of Albania.

In March 1992, the Democratic Party won the elections, and a year later, Fatos Nano was imprisoned, after being accused of corruption and abuse of office by the court. His imprisonment became the main problem of post-communist Albania, because many socialists believed that this imprisonment was a consequence of Nano's opposition to the Berisha government.

During 1994, pyramid schemes were becoming popular in Albania, and their collapse in 1997 triggered an armed revolt, instigated by the opposition against the government, demanding the return of money lost in pyramid schemes. This revolt led to the announcement of early elections by the then president, Sali Berisha.

Nano was released from prison after an amnesty granted by Berisha. The elections were won by the Socialist Party. Berisha resigned and the new Parliament elected Rexhep Mejdani as president. President Mejdani appointed Fatos Nano as prime minister.

In September 1998, the assassination of Azem Hajdari led to a popular revolt and forced Fatos Nano to resign. Fatos Nano was found not guilty by a court in Tirana of charges of abuse of office and corruption in 1999.

The Socialist Party continued to govern the country and won the elections in June 2001. Nano became Prime Minister for the third time in July 2002, appointed by President Alfred Moisiu. On 3 July 2005, the Socialist Party lost the elections and its majority in parliament. The Democratic Party won the majority and its leader, Sali Berisha, was appointed Prime Minister of the new government. On 1 September 2005, Nano resigned as leader of the Socialist Party.

Nano sought to be elected president on July 8, 2007, after the end of President Moisiu's term. The majority of opposition MPs, led by the Socialist Party, did not support his candidacy and boycotted the elections.

As a member of the Albanian Parliament, Nano has served the areas of Kuçova, Tepelena and Saranda.

Fatos Nano studied at the "Sami Frashëri" high school in Tirana. He completed his higher studies at the University of Tirana (Faculty of Economics).

In 1975, he completed his specialization in Political Economy. In 1983, with decision no. 81, dated September 23, 1983, of the University of Tirana, he received the title of “Doctor of Science” in the field of economics, while in 2000, the title of “Professor Doctor” in the field of economics.

From the International University of Milan (Italy), in 2000, he was awarded the title "Doctor Honoris Causa" in the field of Economics and Communication Technology, and in the same year, he received the honorary title "Doctor Honoris Causa" in the field of economic sciences, from the University of Bari (Italy).
