The President of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities, Marc Cools, has expressed concern about cases where mayors are held in prolonged detention.
Citing the situation of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, he said that this is extremely worrying.
"As the Venice Commission highlighted in a report prepared at the request of Congress, when applied to mayors, the excessive length of pre-trial detention not only has a chilling effect on the exercise of democratic freedom, but also prevents public actors and citizens from participating in political meetings for fear of accountability or retaliation," Cools said.
“The Congress continues its dialogue with the national authorities of Turkey and is preparing a new visit to the country, including meeting with Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu and other imprisoned mayors, to express our continued support for the protection of local democracy in the country,” he said.
The Congress of Local Authorities will also conduct a monitoring mission to Albania on November 17-19.
