Korça police have caught 4 young men red-handed digging holes in the Illyrian Monumental Tombs of Lower Selca in Mokër.

The young men were caught by the local police inspector, who was notified on the operational route by the village residents, who had seen young men with metal detonators digging in the side part of the archaeological territory.

Sources indicate that the young men are from the Korça area and that investigative actions are being carried out with them in the field, to be later accompanied to the police station.

This is the first time that the police have caught people red-handed digging to find metals or valuable archaeological objects in Illyrian tombs.

Meanwhile, three other illegal excavations have been detected over a period of 2-3 months, but their perpetrators have not been identified.

The Illyrian tombs of Selca, dating back to the late 4th century BC, are unique in their kind in all of Europe.

They have been declared an archaeological zone A, but entry for people looking for archaeological objects is extremely easy, as the area is not fenced off by the relevant ministry.

With the construction of the new Qukës-Qafë Plloçë road, which passes very close to them, people looking for gold have even more ease in entering the area, making the Illyrian Cemetery of Selca a prey to treasure hunters.
