The federal police agency ICE escorted Sokol Hoxha, convicted in absentia in Albania for the murder of two brothers, Hektor and Ilirian Banaj, as an illegal immigrant who had committed a crime in his homeland.
He was deported in the presence of US marshals and Albanian officers for the double crime committed in 1997 over a cassette recorder.
The 51-year-old from Patos is sentenced to 25 years in prison and, for his arrest in Ohio, several international and Albanian police teams were engaged, along with the International Criminal Investigations Unit at the American Embassy in Tirana.
Journalist Anila Hoxha reports that immediately after touching Albanian soil, he was handed over to detention center 313, where he will undergo judicial and penitentiary system procedures.
A reliable source close to the Prosecutor's Office told Top Channel that, due to hiding from justice for a long time and a legal battle through which the authorities had refused his extradition, Hoxha was brought to Albania through ICE as a deportee.
After the murder committed in collaboration, Hoxha committed another crime in Belgium, killing Brunilda Hoxha, for which he was sentenced to life imprisonment in Brussels.
When wanted by two countries, Sokol Hoxha apparently fled to Great Britain, where, under the identity of Hysen Gashi, he obtained a British passport. In 2012, the wanted man moved to America, where he started a new life.
With the 51-year-old's return, the battle that will take place in Albania is related to the requests he is expected to submit for statute of limitations, which means release, since more years have passed on the run than the sentence announced.
For this reason, the Albanian Prosecution has initiated communication with Brussels, which has not yet requested Hoxha to be handed over to serve his life sentence there.
Albania's claim, until this issue is resolved, will be the possibility for this citizen to serve this sentence for the murder of the 19-year-old in Albania./ TCH
