"We have no work", the situation of women in rural areas in the north

The northern area of Albania has concentrated economic activity mainly in the agriculture and livestock sector. In such small municipalities as Hasi, Tropoja, Kukësi, Puka, Vau-Dejës or Malësia e Madhe, the majority of employees and self-employed are women and girls. As worker Nexhmije Plangaj says, they face every day not only household chores, but also the difficulties of working in agriculture.

"All of us who are here come from Postriba, we come for our needs since we don't have jobs", she says.

The situation created this year, due to Russia's aggression in Ukraine, has extended its influence in the agricultural sector with the increase in the price of oil and agricultural inputs, but also with the difficulties created for the sale of agricultural products. The worker Shpresa Mustali says that this situation is also burdening the lives of women in rural areas.

With the support of the EU, the women's center "Easy steps" is working to identify the problems of women and girls in most of the municipalities in the north of Albania.

The head of this center, Denada Shpuza, says that, from a study carried out by this center, although about 96% of the work in agriculture is done by women, the earned income is not administered by them.

"The study showed that women and girls work a lot in agriculture and animal husbandry, in addition to housework. And, most of the time it is women who do the work in agriculture and livestock. It is that invisible work because, despite providing the family's income, this income continues to be managed by men", says Ms. Shpuza.

Although in Albania women play an important role in the agricultural sector as they make up about 55% of the labor force, they manage only 7% of the country's agricultural and livestock farms. This, says Ms. Shpuza, is because women. are deprived of the right of ownership.

"In the majority of cases, women continue to be deprived of the right to property, which means that most of them encounter problems either to make applications, or to open a business, or to to run a business in these properties, which are still not in their name", she says.

The problems arising from the territory, such as the lack of transport, drinking water, the lack of 24-hour health centers as well as nurseries and kindergartens with lunch, although they are a concern of the whole community, first of all they burden the lives of women and girls in the areas rural./VOA
